It seems that there are a lot of unsourced and wild stories circulating around the internet surrounding Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian cricket team. These wild claims suggest that Gambhir is on the brink of being removed as the coach of the team, as a result of their back-to-back test white washes. And that VVS Laxman would replace Gambhir as the head coach for test matches. Total drama right? Well BCCI has just responded to these rumours and put them to rest.
Rajeev Shukla, vice-president of BCCI, spoke with ANI and stated "BCCI has no intention of removing Gambhir or bringing in a new coach to replace him". Devajit Saikia, secretary of BCCI, agreed and stated that the suggestion of removing Gambhir and bringing in Laxman was "totally speculative" and "baseless." Big names are saying there is no truth to the media hype over Gambhir's future, so let us all remain calm.
As a reminder, India has just lost back-to-back test series at home, first to South Africa 0 - 2, and last year NZ knocked out India from the ICC World Test Championship final after they also lost to NZ, 0-3, so there was added pressure on Gambhir to keep his job as the head coach. An ex-England player has even made a joke about Gambhir coaching for India in the Ranji Trophy. But BCCI is not willing to remove Gambhir.
One of the reasons we may have seen all this media speculation on Gambhir is because there have been so many negative results for India recently. The current support for Gambhir has not changed. The cricketing world will continue to support Gambhir.
